Basic Strip Down Guide... Hudson PPSh41

Hudson’s PPSh41 is a very simple and easy gun to strip, dismantle and maintain. Just like its real life counterpart, it was designed to be a solid and reliable weapon capable of being taken apart and maintained by a soldier in the field with the minimum of tools.

Cleaning and Re-assembly have already been covered in separate Step by Step Guides so this guide begins with your PPSh41 in need of dismantling after firing.

Inspection of parts for damage will be dealt with in a separate Guide.

Step 1. Barrel Shroud Removal

Three socket head screws secure the Shroud over the barrel. Removing these screws allows the shroud and the front sling loop to push forwards and off the barrel.

Once the shroud is out of the way, you’ll see the pins securing the barrel …

Step 2. Barrel Removal from Stock (including Bolt, Recoil Spring and Guide Removal)

First, push the Upper Receiver End Cap forwards with your thumb. It is spring-loaded and once released, allows the barrel assembly to hinge forwards...

It is probably easier to remove the Bolt, Recoil Spring and Guide away at this point. Simply pull the bolt back against Recoil Spring pressure, and lift it up and away from the Receiver.
The Bolt, Recoil Spring and Guide will come away from the stock complete.

Two Spring Clips and Pins secure the Barrel onto the Stock. The spring clips on my PPSh are not particulary strong and will push off without difficulty.

Remove the clips, push the pins through to remove, then pull the Barrel assembly away from the stock.

Step 3. Removal of Detonator Chamber

Remove the two cross-head screws then pull the Chamber from the Barrel

Step 4. Removing Detonator Pin

The metal Detonator Pin is secured by a screw into the metal Detonator Chamber.

Remove the screw and push the Pin out of the Chamber…

That’s it… your PPSh is now stripped to its component parts...

I saw some book said to use 2 minus scrwe drive and push down together, however, I also fail and make a small scratch the surrounding area.

Hi shazhib,

This is how I was shown how to Fit and Remove "C" or "E" Clips.

The job gets a little more difficult if you're working in small confined spaces but, with a bit of patience, this usually works... :wink:

Best tool for the job is a pair of Long Nosed Pliers.

To Remove the Clip:

Place the Upper Jaw of the Pliers against the Pin...
Place the Lower Jaw against the Clip's ends...

Squeeze the Pliers Jaws together and the Clip should slip off

To Fit the Clip, place the Upper Jaw against the closed side of the Clip...
Place the Lower Jaw against the Pin...

Squeeze the Pliers together and...

the Clip should snap into place like this.

The clips used on my Hudson PPSh41 are a very loose fit and can be prised off the pins very easily by levering them with any pointed tool. To avoid scratches and clips "pinging" off and getting lost though, pliers are the best bet!

Hi shazhib

There are many types of locking clips around but it's finding the best to suit that's difficult.

One possibility is to use "R" clips but that means you must have the pin drilled to push the clip through.
(Check out the clips used to lock Motorcycle Rear Wheel axle nuts and you'll see big R clips)
The R clip still needs careful levering off unless there's room to pull it off so scratching is still a risk.

The smaller the pin, the more difficult it gets though. Maybe one of the better engineers out there can suggest one?

I like the spring and pin method used on the M16 series for example. Modifying a Hudson PPSh would be possible, but a LOT of delicate machining would be needed. Not worth it I guess!
