Having obtained a SECOND all-metal Navy Colt I was pretty smug with myself - until I started to handle the new acquisition!
The short arm of the ram lever kept dropping down.
After removing the retaining screw I examined it - and at first saw what I thought was red-material from a broken steel insert of a tamper (the bit that compresses the bullet into the powder in the cylinder chamber).
When I compared the arm with the one in my other Navy colt, it turned out to be red-plastic material, the same as used on the hand grip.
Using a drill-press the plastic remnant was soon removed, and a temporary wooden tamper was quickly turned from some wooden dowel. Later this was stained dark brown and inserted into the bored out hole in the short arm.
It works fine - and I mention it because I wonder if anyone has come across this plastic fitting in their Replica black-powder arms?
