Its a Flare pistol with a rifled barrel and the Germans developed various explosive warheads to fire from it although only anti personnel rather than armoured piercing , I`ve got an image somewhere of one of these pistols fitted with an M39 egg grenade attachment and some of the kampfpistole`s could be fitted with a stock for support .

I do believe there is an airsoft one of these , unless this is it .

If I understand that right, it is a kind of predecessor of the US M79 40 mm granade launcher, which was introduced with great sucess in the Vietnam era to fill the gap between 50 (handgrenade) and 300 (Mortar) meters.
