Could someone tells me what is exactly the "side fire system"
I know it is usually used in metal guns (like Marushin Automag) and the cartridges have a little hole in their side, but I don't understand exactly how they are. Are they not open at their end? Same question for the barrel of guns wich use them?

Hi Radback,

The side fire system was Marushins first attempt at an acceptable firing system that would be safe from un-safe modifacations.

The side fire system refers to the "firing pin" or plate, that strikes the cartridge rim on the "side" pushing the cartridge into the detonator in the barrel. Also, the cartridge extractor in the side fire system, is part of the firing plate as the plate has to move forward along with the cartridge. So, the manufactures cannot put in a real type extractor.

This system was replaced by the later cartridge/firing pin design, the "center fire" that hits the cartridge in the center, pushing the "primer" piece into the cap and the cap (and piston) into the detonator.

The center fire firing pin looks just like a real gun firing pin and since the cartridge doesn't move forwards during firing, the center firing modelguns actually have functional extractors.

The side fire system is ok, but it generates friction as the hit from the hammer has to be strong enough to drive the firing plate into the cartridge and the cartridge/cap/piston into the detonator inside the barrel.

If the hammer spring isn't strong enough, the cartridge might not be forced into the detonator with enough force to fire the cap. And, if the hammer spring is too strong, the pressure generated by the cap will have to fight against the hammer, recoil and other springs.

The center fire system is far better, as the cartridge doesn't have to be moved forward just the solid brass "primer" the cap and the "piston"so, I consider the center fire the best system!

Thanks Mark for your detailed explanation.
I also have the same question before.

I just bought a second handed Marushin P-38. It is great except it has dummy extractor. The extractor is built inside the barrel. This is bad as it is not realistic. I wish Marushin will produce a centre fire P-38 soon.

Someone also gave me a broken Marushin Hi Power ABS. It is the same as the P-38, having a dummy extractor. But Marushin produces centre fire Hi Power later as I also have a HW version with working extractor.

Hi John,

The Marushin P-38 that you just bought, is that an older version? It sounds like my Marushin P-38 (made in the 1980's) it's the type that uses the PFC cartridges, but instead of the normal caps, Marushin supplied empty caps that you placed paper cap "blisters" into to make the caps..

The detail on this early PFC Marushin P-38 is fairly poor: The slide is too tall, the barrel is wrong etc. But in Marushins defense, they tried to make a decent P-38 replica But Marushin was still fairly new to modelguns at that point.

How is your Hi-power broken? Also, what version is it?

Hi Mark,

I really don't know what version is my P-38. I just know it is the commercial model (not military model)

What is PFC cartridge ? Besides that dummy extractor & the polished ABS plastic feel, I'm rather satisfied with it.
I really wish Marushin will produce the centre fire system for it. Even better if it has the all metal version, like the P-08 !! Please help to feedback my wish to Marushin !!

For my Hi Power ABS, there is one metal bar inside the slide (next to the extractor) broken. I think it is called the sear lever, as from an exploded diagram. The slide stop also breaks up into 4 pieces. I think it is the earliest Marushin kit version with side fire system.

I also have another HW version (centre fire system) also have the sear lever broken.

Hi John,

Yes, mine is the commercial version too, with the Walther trademarks.

The finish on mine too, is rather polished looking which doesn't look right in my opinion. I think that we have the same type of early Marushin.

The PFC stands for Plug Fire Cartridge which is a Marushin invention, it is the first modelgun cartridge to use a cap instead of paper caps.

I don't know for sure, but, I think that Marushin might of made a centerfire P-38 in the past. I could be mistaken though..

That's too bad about the Marushin Brownings. Though, it's nice to know which parts are easily broken and are worth buying as spares...

Hi Mark,

Today I just bought another second handed Marushin Hi Power ABS with side fire system. It has metered rear sight. I thought it may be the 1935 military version. Right ? I also got the cartridges with flat solid bottom. I don't think we can easily buy those cartridges today. This one does not have any part broken and is in good working condition. I'm happy that it joins my collections.

Hi John,

Another Browning HP? Side Fire System? Icon_smile

I have wanted to buy the Marushin HW kit version of the Browning since I noticed that they where offering them.

But, I was busy spending money on other things so, I missed out on buying one.

Yes, the older versions of the Marushin cartridges are hard to find. They are functionally the same as the later versions, but they look different due to their solid bases. This change was due to manufacturing/appearance reasons. (they do look funny though, no"primers")
