Hi Gavin,
If you have the dummy rounds that are supplied with the gun then you can "dry fire" the gun with these as the primers have been removed and so the firing pin does not strike anything, but i would not recommend it if you have real bullets with the percussion cap in place as it will probally damage the pin. Have you thought about using "snap caps" as a way to dry fire

snap caps are basically dummy rounds for dry firing that was used in real handguns/rifles. Some have plastic casing and some have metal casing. It is used to prevent damage to firing pins. See the website below that sells snap caps.

Thanks 1911 !

I bought some inert .45 rounds off e-Bay rthat have the primer cap missing (for safety I guess)
If Gavin got this type of inert round would they dry fire in his M60?
There's nothing for the pin to hit?

Cerwyn,

The best dummy cartridges to use are the manufacturers (Kokusai, MGC, KSC etc.) cartridges which are intended to cushion the "firing pin" from damage by the use of spring loaded "primers". Unfortunately, many of the dummy cartridges sold by the manufacturers are full length cartridges without clearance for the detonators. So, the manufacturers include a replacement false detonator that clears the dummy carridges.

However, the dummy revolver cartridges don't require the replacement cylinders etc. to clear these cartridges as they are designed to clear the cylinders "detonators".

Now, I would think that the revolvers that you don't intend to fire caps out of would be better served to get the custom open-ended replacement cylinders that take the full length dummy cartridges then, they could take advantage of the real "snap-caps"

Gavin,

Snap caps are available in just about all of the most popular calibers. What I ment by open cylinders is a cylinder that doesn't have a detonator built into the end of the cylinder to fire the cap. These open ended cylinders are intended to chamber dummy cartridges only and they can't fire caps.
