PostSubject: Dura Ble finish on metal models   Sun Oct 25, 2015 10:22 pm

I have just ordered a can of Dura Blue, from the makers of the Duracoat range of firearm spray paints.  In the real steel world, Duracoat in general has a good reputation, but Dura Blue is quite a new addition to their range.  It is an aerosol spray compound which claims to almost perfectly mimic conventional bluing.

In my experience, the metal used for most model guns can be blued by conventional methods, to a high standard, but Wa Shan models are an exception. I have tried bluing a Wa Shan Colt 1911 and a Beretta M84, both orinally "silver" finished.  Despite careful preparation and painstaking application, I was unable to get a good finish on either.  Coverage was uneven and in places the underlying orange tint of the metal shows through, looking like fine surface rust.

Dura Blue is not a true bluing process, but a coating which is claimed to reproduce the appearance of real bluing.  The few videos on YouTube make it lo as if this may be true.  Has any member here tried it, and,if so, with what result?

Happy Hallwe'en to all,

Horsemarine

I haven't heard of this product previously but would be very interested to learn more about it.
This method of replicating a Blued finish could be perfect on ABS models as well as the metal types not suited to conventional cold bluing fluids & pastes.
Marushin's UZI Receiver is another example that Cold Bluing will not work correctly on.

Thanks for the "Heads Up" on this one, definitely a topic worth looking at.
