Need help and guidance

Hello to everyone,
I am new to this forum and could use some help. I am new to the PFC realm, and have recently purchased a Hudson MK II Sten and MGC M11. I plan on purchasing more, due to needs of film making. Here are my questions:
1. For the Sten, what exact size rounds do I need and where can I get them from reliable source?

2. Since I live in the USA, I understand getting the caps for the rounds is either impossible, or very difficult. If there is a source out there for me I would appreciate any leads.

3. Are there alternatives to the caps that I could access in the US?

4. Would real small pistol primers work? Or is it to powerful?

for caps speak to johnnyv on this forum but unfortunatley they are expensive these days due to the way they have to be exported from Japan and the cost of that. Caps can no longer be sent by simple good old mail anymore. pistol primers as far as i am aware will not work as i doubt they would be set off but i could be wrong, not something we can try over here. No real alternatives as far as i know if there were we would be using them.
rounds are 9mm cp rounds but you wont find hudson rounds now, just not available. i would speak to shazib again on this forum and look at picking up c-tec 9mm rounds i think they will work in the hudson

Thanks Claymore! I appreciate your help! I may have to do some R and D on the pistol primer thing. That would open a lot doors for me. The MGC replicas are excellent for film. For now, there are just props that won't function fully. But, once I get this figured out it will be great. I will ask the other folks you mentioned and see what happens. Can you recommend any trust worthy sites that sell any replicas, accessories etc?

You'll find the forum and its members to be very friendly and helpful.

There was a gentleman who did make some special carts for use in the MGC M4 that used primers. I don't think they were a "production" run but more of a small, custom fabrication.

There are a number of reputable model dealers, including our forum's own JohnnyV as mentioned above.

One other thing, I have seen the primer cartridges on you tube. I believe the guy is from Germany. I think once you get them made, it would be good. It just a matter of that happening. Thanks again!

The Uzi is a great model, in my opinion, because it is full metal. Not a very good reputation for firing out of the box, but it can be modified. No longer produced, you'll have to find a used one or a new old stock (probably a kit) version. The oldest version has a metal grip frame and does not convert easily. There are two PFC versions, one with a plastic grip frame and the other, more desirable and rare one has a metal frame.

The CAW M3A1, while primarily a HWABS construction, is extremely reliable for firing- right out of the box! A pretty cool model to have in your collection.

Thanks again, I will keep my eyes out. I am saying my money up for it. Nothing is cheap these days, oh well what are you going to do. Since I need them for filming, I plan on editing in the correct sound for that weapon, so I need the working action with flash if possible. Real legal full auto weapons are expensive, and are difficult to obtain for what I want to do. It is preferable, but not reasonable right now, being a low budget situation. I really hate CGI for this type of look. Its worth it to me to do it right. So PFC is it for now. This, of course is a challenge to because of lack of accessories. I'll do what I can.

As the collection grows, I will release. I only have a Hudson MK II Sten and MGC M11 PFC for now.

I think MG Props still have some NoS Hudson cartridges - at least they did late last year!?!.

Be careful how you treat that Hudson Sten - they are (imo) made of the zinc alloy equivalent of plasticine and make anything made by WE look as if they're made of titanium! Mine fell over and snapped it's barrel clean off.

Thanks for the heads up. Funny you mentioning that about the barrel. I set it on my counter top in the kitchen, just sitting on the counter bent the barrel slightly. Note to self. I will be extra careful. The cartridges, looks like will be difficult to find.

I've never had a Hudson Sten, but I have noticed in some Hudson M1A1's that I've owned that there is a definite difference in the zinc metal quality, depending upon the year. The older stuff seemed to be better, with some of the more recent castings being porous and prone to breakage. and when it breaks, it almost disintegrates and is nearly impossible to repair in my experience. I had a couple mag catches break on me and I either had to modify a real one to fit or get a Hudson piece of older manufacture to fix the issue.

What are some of the more robust replicas? Like I mentioned before the Maurshin UZI and CAW M3A1 are next. Are those some what robust? I may go out on a limb and get an actual BFONG Sten from Indianapolis Ordnance. They are a bit high, but considering how much a legal full auto Sten is. I might have to do it. These will be used as movie props so, we'll see.

I'll give you my opinion on those models since I own them both - but others may have different experiences.

Uzi - in general, very sturdy model and heavy zinc construction. All parts will wear much, much faster than a real steel counterpart, but the parts most prone to issues from wear seem to be the bolt face (from firing) and if you have the plastic grip frame version, the mag catch pin bosses might be subject to breakage. The older model had a full stamped, blued steel grip frame so the mag catch issue is non-existent.
The Uzi was a very popular model, so it seems they can be found in varying states of condition, even for sale here in the US occasionally.

CAW M3A1 - this is a heavyweight resin/abs model. Basically a modified and improved version of the old Hudson M3A1. The reciprocating pieces seem quite durable and the firing performance is probably unmatched in the model gun world. The bolt face is aluminum, but it is a pretty direct loading route from the mag to the chamber, so it does seem to wear ok. The model comes with a spare extractor claw as the original installed one was hardened and supposedly prone to breakage. The spare included is tougher, so if you want to fire reliably, it is best to install the spare. I never even tried with the original claw, so I didn't break mine - but that is my understanding.

Since the real version has stamped parts that are spot-welded, I believe parts such as the sling attachments are only glued on with the model - so I personally wouldn't hang one from a sling for fear that the attachment point may come loose and cause the model to fall and get damaged.

I think the restrictions on shipping caps just got a lot tighter a couple of years ago. Japanese sellers used to send them to the US, but not any longer.

I don't know what the rules are on fireworks, but somehow they make it over here! Why can't we get caps shipped the same way?????
