| Post by Gatling A while ago I bought an old style, open barrel MGC Thompson of Franky, which is an excellent gun (thanks Francky!). The frame/barrel part of it had a kind of goldish, rustic look which was quite cool, but not realistic. This bugged me a bit as I wanted it to look more like a real gun, so it was time to do something about it! The MGC Thompson in it's original finish. Sweet, but not quite right. It had a few spots here and there which is nice to get rid of. The surface also felt quite rugged and not smooth as a gun should be After lots of sanding and Dremel polishing, the frame/barrel part looked like this, ready to be blackened with Birchwood Aluminum Black. I also smoothened the surface and removed lots of those casting lines. Finito! I polished edges a little extra to give that used, old look. The finish didn't became completely black, but very dark grey. The job really paid off though, as it looks a heck of a lot better now Next off now is refinishing the Minigun... | |

| Post by Claymore Excellent job mate, there is a lot of hard work gone into that. It's good to see what can be acheived with a bit of elbow grease. | |

| Post by Reemo I'm most impressed with the POLISHING part.....wow!! It looks like a new "blank"! ........CRAZY amount of "will", there Is there anyway you could take a photo outside in the natural light so I can see what the black looks like there? Thanks for sharing _________________ "This is your life......and its ending one minute at a time." Last edited by Reemo on Sat May 20, 2006 2:47 am; edited 1 time in total | |

| Post by Mark That looks great Gatling! Nice to see that someone else has spent their time wisely!
And Yes, I too would like to see pictures of your MGC out in natural light as it would show off your work better. Did you try "superblue"? before you used the alumablack? I have tried alumablack on aluminum and zinc before and I didn't get good results until I lightly soaked a small corner of a cloth rag and rubbed it on a small section of aluminum (and later on zinc) the finish slowly appeared over time and has taken alot of handling before it starts to wear off. _________________ Wanted to buy: MGC Sten MK3....trades?(still)

| Post by Gatling Thanks guys! It was a lot of work indeed, specially around the cooling fins I enjoy looking at the gun way much more now, so I would definitively do it again Haven't tried superblue, I only thought that aluminum black would work. I did the process of applying alumablack two times to get a more even finish, maybe a coat of superblue on top would make it look even better? Sadly I didn't put it together and took a pic of it when it was polished down, I guess I was a little eager to blue it I have taken some more pictures of it, but I was a little worried about waving around with a gun outside so I took them by some windows: | |

| Post by Gatling Thats correct Reemo. I only did the barrel/frame part, that was the part that had the goldish finish. I should maybe had done the rest too, but that can wait. | |

| Post by Reemo Hi Gatling Just my opinion, but I think the whole gun should match - "2-tone" is the mark of the "half way" restoration on these MGC Thompons. I see them on eBay with the upper receiver CLEARLY spraypainted black and the lower unrestored, still wearing scratches, gouges, fading etc - they look awful. Id rather see the whole gun worn out than to see half and half. Take the time to pull the trigger group out and do the lower - you did such a nice job on the uppper. _________________ "This is your life......and its ending one minute at a time." | |

| Post by Gatling Thanks Reemo, you are absolutely right, I should do the rest of the gun too. The lower receiver has a nasty casting line underneath which would be nice to even out, however I am a bit worried about taking the trigger mechanism apart, as I don't have any manual or something, but I have to try anyway. Spraypaint don't belong on guns! The Minigun is all spraypainted matt black and looks very plasticy. The damn spraypaint really sticks to the metal and only thoroughly sanding removes it. It's going to be a awfull job polishing it down, but picturing it all blued keeps me going | |
