Hi everyone. I am very new to collecting modelguns. I have only one currently; an MGC colt 1911a1. I hope to get more into collecting and learn new things. A few things I have noticed about modelguns is that they are almost identical to the real deal. I was stopped by security at a reenacting convention last weekend (not old enough to own a real handgun) and had a hard time showing that it was not a firearm. Secondly as for caps, I have found that ordinary caps you buy at the toy store work just fine in my colt 45. I look forward to collecting, and having a great time.

Welcome to the forums colhesler Hello Icon_biggrin It's always good to be able to welcome new members and newcomers to the modelgun hobby.

There's a wealth of information here for you to browse through. Please feel free to ask anything relating to these models, we're always more than happy to help and share hints and tips to make the hobby more enjoyable

"Toy" gun caps have been discussed here at various times. Is your Colt 1911 a blowback version, which cartridges does it use Hello Icon_question
Most of the latter 1911 models with blowback usually need a 7mm dia cap to ensure good gas-seal, we've seen the 5mm dia Toy caps, can you buy these as 7mm too Hello Icon_question

Hi colhesler,

Thanks for the info Hello Icon_biggrin The model you have would have been designed to use a 7mm dia. cap for best performance so it's really interesting to read that you're able to use the toy caps successfully. As far as I know, I think I've only seen these in 5mm. I remember another member managed to use 5mm toy caps in MGC Thompson .45CP cartridges with good results by pushing the cartridge piston deeper into the case so that it held the cap in place.

Here's a link to the standard method of loading MGC cartridges, although the cartridge itself is for a different gun, the method is exactly the same:

It'd be interesting to see how you're loading your .45s to get good results. Those toy caps are generally very cheap to buy, there could be way of saving money here Hello Icon_wink
