I just picked up an early MGC MP40 that I'm hoping to get converted over to fire PFC carts. It has a solid plug installed in the chamber that I can't get to budge. Any tips on removing a stubborn plug? The trunion and plug are chrome plated and it doesn’t appear to be rusted or corroded in place.

Thanks all,
Jayrbenz

Hi Jayson,

Perhaps the plug has been peened over or pressed in place by the factory or someone else. If you can post a picture of the chamber as well as the barrel side of the plug. That would help to give me an idea of what the problem is.

Exactly! The plug that you have there is definately not a factory MGC plug. It looks like a homemade plug of somesort that has been jamed into the chamber. Why? Who knows. I guess that the question would now be: How to remove it with out destroying the receiver etc. I personally would suggest obtaining a long steel rod (longer than the receiver) and a hammer to punch out the plug from the chamber side out. Or, drill a hole through the center of the plug starting with a small bit and work slowly up in size until the plug is really thin. If the plug is drilled, it might just spin out of the hole with out damaging anything. However, there is a chance that the bit could either break or the hole might be off center. I would recomend punching it out from the chamber side before drilling it though. It makes me wonder why they put that plug in the chamber....

Thanks guys. I've got a long delrin rod that I'll try to punch it out with. I'm going to give it a shot tomorrow and I'll post the results.

Well..... the plot thickens. After some more poking around I found this hole. It looks like it extends down into the plug. I'm thinking there might be a roll pin holding the plug in. Any suggestions?

What where they trying to do to this poor MGC MP40?? There is a chance that there is a either a roll pin, drilled out solid pin or a set screw or something else in that hole. Its a shame that they did this to an otherwise nice MP40! I would try to drill out the pin (if there is one) then try to knock out the chamber blockage.

Well,
I think I'm in way over my head on this one. I started drilling out the hole with a small bit and guess what...... yup, the bit bogged down and snapped off. I'm not sure if I want to continue or just concede defeat and have a nice wall hanger. I did manage to slide the chamber back and it isn't totally solid. Below is an "artist's" rendition of what it looks like as I couldn’t really get a good picture of it. Is this normal for the MGC's?

Thanks for all the help,

Here you go

Too much force may split the middle section ,(I have seen this) however there is a place in the UK that will sell you a replacemnt trunnion if it all goes pear shaped.

Good News! I ended up drilling from the barrel side back into the plug and eventually reached the point where I cleared the roll pin and was able to pop it out through the chamber. Thanks for all of the help guys!

That's great that you got it out! As the trunion replacement is a real pain as there are sheet metal tabs that hold the trunion in place and these can cause some real problems. And, a great deal of pressure is required to get the trunion moving without damaging it either replacing or removing the old trunion.
