Last week this MRI (MGC) Long Barrel (12 inch) Colt SAA came up on a local auction. Only one other bidder, and so I got it real cheap!
Came with its original box too (less the styrene insert)!
These are the only markings - on the receiver and base of the grip:
It has a blocked barrel which is in very good condition for its age (c.1970) with no cracks or corrosion as can happen with such a large zinc casting (advice from forum member
kharris before I placed a bid).
This model Colt was sometimes called a
Buntline Special and there is some controversy whether or not Wyatt Erp was given one. Lots to read about the pros and cons on Google!
http://home.earthlink.net/~knuthco1/Itemsofinterest3/Buntlinesource.htm I tend to believe Wyatt Erp WAS given one and maybe used it at the Gunfight at the
OK Corral -the Smith & Wesson used in the
Tombstone movie was an underpowered almost obsolete pistol compared to this beastie. So given a choice, I think a man of Erp's experience would have taken a Colt.
Tombstone is a great movie nevertheless!
My Western Frontier Pistol Collection (excluding a MGC Winchester 73 and a Denix British Bulldog) now looks like this!
