| It is "like" a muff pistol, but has some features that are very different 1 The button trigger (the "normal" looking trigger part is just a finger rest) 2 The hinged tray, no nipple for percussion cap, just a space? a thin cap could go in there but would be facing the wrong way to normal? there is a pinhole to allow ignition to the barrel. 3 nornally on this type barrel would unscrew to allow loading with powder and ball, this one would need to be rammed from front. Very different to the norm??? not sure if early toy or what??? I was hoping one of our US friends could shed some light they know their guns!! | |

| My second guess is some type of small bore parlour (Amer.=parlor) pistol that used a special cap and a small lead-ball with a cavity o hold a little gunpowder! I'm probably miles away from reality, but it's fun to guess! Very intriguing. Question: Is the round finger stop the same diameter as the cap holder recess? And if so was it used to help form the cap maybe? Kiwigunner | |

| Hi Thanks for thinking about this:) The bore is about 10mm and the pin hole small so I think any powder charge would not get through the flash hole as much as it would blast out the side? so I "think" just a cap in the cavity and main charge in the barrel, but really still no idea It is heavy and solid..... | |

| The closest looking match in my books is the already mentioned National No. 1 Derringer (1860-65) and No. 2 Derringer which was bought out by Colt in 1870 and became Colt No. 2 Derringer. No clue about the cavity and mechanism though...
Maybe a copy/imitation from the era, if not modern?

| Pretty sure its not modern, I know what you mean about the Derringer look but its that "button" trigger, and the disk primer setup thats causing the problems.... Of course could be home made, but its so well made.....
I can find NO other small pistol with the trigger/disk primer like that???,,,,, must be a reference out there somewhere....
