Flintlock?

Hi everyone - sorry for the newb questions:

I came across your forum because I'm shooting a short film in a month and am researching my options for a pistol duel between two characters. I'm wondering, do model guns exist in flintlock style?

We're going to be shooting the film in an area where I'd really like to cut down on (or cut out completely) sparks and noise. BUT I'd love to get smoke - so we don't have to VFX it (which often looks so cheesy). But with flintlock pistols that I'm finding at prop houses you need gunpowder which poses lots of hazards (plus needing insurance, a permit, etc).

Any thoughts/info at all would be helpful! Thanks!

I don't believe there's a cap-firing Modelgun in Flintlock form available BUT the Airsoft market have one that might suit your needs.

One of those airsofts with a little talc in the barrel should make a good 'smoke' cloud.

The denix could probably have a cap fitted on the nipple for bang/flash/smoke. Possibly a small hole could be drilled through the nipple down to the barrel bore (if there is one) and the cap might push some smoke out the barrel maybe with talc in the barrel again (or could the cap's sparks ignite flash cotton in the barrel?).

Or depending on the angle of the filming, if the denix does have a hollow barrel you drill into the (off camera) side of it, insert a flexible tube and have someone blow down it using the talc in barrel again.

just get these, the cap with a small mix of powder and a wad will make a bang but with out a projectile

Yeah, what you've got pictured is caplocks not flintlocks. You could load a percussion cap and maybe just some flash paper or flash cotton, which may or may not ignite from the cap alone. You can also fit normal cheapie plastic caps in them generally, which is even quieter.

Flintlocks would be harder, since the mechanism on that just sparks, so you need at least some powder outside the barrel, for the 'flash in the pan' (yep, that's where the expression comes from) even if nothing goes off in the barrel.

You can always just drop a lit cigarette down the barrel if you just need a shot of the post-firing smoke.
