Anyway 3D printing is a great idea in theory... but what's the point when in total it's going to cost more....

Availability.

There are models/parts that you can't buy easily or at all, even paying lot of money. Being able to print them means you can get them, even if at higher price. Of course this will no longer be a collectible vintage item of Japanese origin (as modelguns are), yet still a very usable and fun object to have.
