OK so I am looking to get a new revolver for a short film which is part of a series looking at mental illness. The gun itself is plastic with metal filings, but I'd like to recreate the "blued steel" look. Any ideas on how one could achieve this?

One suggestion is "buffable" metalizer paints.
you can get them from (scale)model shops from different paint maufacturers.

To my expirience its common for all that they need a top coat of clear - else they get a bit sticky

Hannants in UK used to have them i small spray cans

Hello Joe

If you type in "Bluing" or "Blued" into the Search facility you'll find several posts that may be helpful. Most of them are concerned with bluing Zinc Alloy models but there are one or two dealing with plastics.
Here's one

The paints that c_alexanderson mentions sound very interesting and worth checking out.

It's also possible to use Birchwood Casey Bluing fluids intended or steel on HWABS although I've not tried it myself (another job on my To-Do List). Strip the model into it's component part. Degrease thoroughly. Washing Up liquid and warm water works well, watch out for any de-greaser with solvents that may attack plastics though!
Rub down the parts to Blue with Wet-n-Dry to remove imperfections and achieve a smooth polished surface.
Apply the Bluing Fluid as per Birchwood' instructions.
If the model is to be handled a lot, it'll need a coat of clear lacquer to stop the compound rubbing off in time.

Please keep us informed how you get on with yours...
