For me modelguns are about having safe prop guns to use for theatre and film, for indoor use without being too loud, etc.
While I could buy a real Remington 870 shotgun for cheaper than a modelgun version (and it'd be much sturdier and more reliable!), you are correct- with full auto firearms that's not the case. Not only do you need the $200 tax stamp per weapon, and the extra background check, they are of very limited availability (have to be made or imported prior to a certain date I believe, for civilian purchase to be legal), which means they cost in the tens of thousands of dollars. You can also get types of modelguns that are illegal here, like sawed-off shotguns. Even silencers are restricted and expensive (again with the $200 tax stamp too) here, when on real guns.
