Sadly, I am not sure about the modelgun revolver differences at this time as I am a semi/full collector not so much a revolver fan. I would suppose that the earlier revolvers might have had open cylinders as well as open barrels that where semi-blocked. I am sure that the earlier revolvers where discontinued in 1972 or so. Its hard to say just what features that the early modelguns truly had without more help from the Japanese on the subject as they are the true experts.

Semi blocked=A barrel with an obstruction or half way blocked bore NOT an fully open un blocked barrel..The Japanese Government would never permit that..

Probably the biggest difference is the material they are made of, the old ones are plastic and look like plastic very shiny very light the newer the model the better the material, hw, shw and the guns look better. that apart the rounds themselves are different the old models dont have real size rounds and the caps normally fit externally inthe bullet nose. new ones have a real size round and the cap fits inside the round which means you dont need the chamber blocks to act as a detonater. Dont think there is any difference otherwise.
And as for metal models i think only the rounds are different
