Hi Rhodri,

I only know that this model was designed by CAW, it is not reproduction of an older model. They could have based this on existing experience with producing their Mauser 98k.

Craft Apple Works used to be a shop selling modelguns made by other companies, but in 1990 they have started their own design and production. Their first model was Colt Navy 51 (I think). They designed Colt 1911, Bergmann MP18 and several other modelguns. CAW also bough a few molds from other companies when they went bankrupt, for example Colt .32 (previously MGC model), Winchester M92 (previously CMC), Mauser 98k (previously CMC, then Tanaka). Apart from modelguns CAW produces also airsoft models, mainly grenade launchers, and airsoft spare parts (under brand Mosquito Molds). It looks that their quality is fairly good, better than most other manufacturers. No idea about how it works with caps.
Downside of CAW is that they produce only small series and their models are fairly expensive. I think that their MP18 was the most expensive modelgun produced (except for custom one-offs).

CAW released M1903 first in January 2008. Current production was completed in December 2009. As far as I know this is the only company that produces M1903.

A few photos of CAW M1903 can be found at this excellent page (in Japanese):
