Hi all

I'm new and happy to be here. I just recently caught the replica bug and purchased a MGC S&W M76. Problems that i identified, as i became familiar with this subject, is the scarce availability of MGC cartridges, of which i didn't know before purchasing the M76 (no regrets). My M76 came with no cartridges nor manuel. If somebody can point me in the right direction to acquire MGC 9 MM cartridges i would be forever greatful. Second, i am unfamiliar with the M76 breakdown and don't want to attempt it blind. If someone can describe the breakdown, i would be greatful. I apologize if this post is redundant. Again, i am glad to be here and thank you guys for accepting me into the forum.

Highwayman,

Welkommen,
I think first thing you want to do is to identify whether your model is for CP-HW rounds (having inner piston) or open rounds (hollow type, no inner piston). If you don't know, then, you can post a photo of chamber (actually, "detonator") so that somebody in this forum can identify.

I don't know if you bought this model for firing or mere displaying, I suggest not to fire. Because:
1) this model was originall released to a market back in early 1980 (I had this when I was at junior high)
2) known problem for this model is crack around the part between ejection port and barrel. Crack on barrel jacket and break on front and rear sights guard.

I think I have a manual, maybe scan it and post.

Regards,

A big wlcome to the forums Highwayman. Never worry about repeating a post, there are so many posts now and all with different title headings that it will be difficult to get the right post you want and any duplicate post can be moved to the appropriate section anyway.

I also have an MGC m76 and i cannot really add anymore than shazib has said already, i do fire mine but only occasionally because of the reason stated by shazib, they are fragile and prone to break as is the mgc M12s another great model.

Getting more magazines (clips) for this gun is difficult to nigh on impossible but rounds are obtainable at least the open style is if you have the cp style then they are hard to find. Francky can help here i think as he has rounds for the mgc m59 (open syle) and althoiugh i have not tried them yet i think they are the same round and if not close enough to work.

If shazib cannot help with a manual i will search through mine, but i cannot remember if i have one or not and off the top of my head i cant think how to strip the gun as its been over a year since i fired mine last but mark will no doubt be able to help on that.

Hello and Welcome to the forums!

The MGC M76 is a great modelgun despite its apparent faults. If you have the open cartridges version or the "CP" version they seem to fire good as long as the caps are loaded correctly and the gun/cartridges are lubricated properly. The very first time that I fired my M76, it functioned perfectly in both semi and fullauto! As for the cartridges availability try forum member "Francky 1958" if he doesn't have the cartridges he can locate them for you.

The M76 shares the M59's cartridges so, if you can locate any MGC M59 cartridges they will work in the M76 as long as its detonator is correct for the given cartridge design.

Gentlemen,

Thank you for your replies. The good news is i was able to dig up some Small Arms Review magazines that featured the S&W M76 disassembly. Following said instructions, i was successfully able to field strip my M76. Bad news is as i was using a toothbrush to gently wipe the bolt clean, i chipped a part of the bolt face, the ejection port side. The bolt in appearance seems to have been used a bit. As a result, the part that chipped, had melted slightly, during previous extensive use, which, caused a little lip. As the tooth brush passed, it caught the lip and pulled it out. MGC Cartridges for S&W M76 Icon_mad . The only remedy i could think of was to use crazy glue to fix it which i did. As a result, i do not think i will attempt to fire it if i ever acquire the proper cartridges. Anyway i am posting some pics of my M76. I hope you guys enjoy it.

Yes, sadly, the broken bolt face is a common MGC M76 problem that many people have discovered. The main reason for the chipped bolt face is the steel insert that is cast into the bolt. This insert swells due to temperature changes and the hammer effect that the piece of heavy steel tends to generate. My solution was to make a new bolt out of aluminum but, that also tends to exacerbate the somewhat weak area of the receiver. However, while the MGC M76 is weak in these areas it shoots great and it is one of the really fun modelguns to shoot!

Rather than start a new thread, i thought i would add to this one...

I have just received a M76 and its in good condition too.... however, no manual or cartridges were with it so i was wondering if anyone knew if this is a open cart or CP version ?

Hmm, That looks like a CP style detonator to me. But, being that it appears to me made out of brass, I wonder if it is an MGC made detonator. If it is steel and it fits well then I would say that it is MGC made. But, it's hard to say at this point just what that detonator was designed for..

Yep, its brass and fits in there well.

The box just says 9mm-MG-BLK(9x24) Patented MG blowback

I actually found a copy of the owners manual for the CP version and this one doesn't look the same, i.e. removable parts on the CP arent removable on this one !

maybe it is an open cart version with a different detonator pin?

I would have to say that it sure doesn't look anything like my original CP detonator nor does it look like the open cartridge detonator either. Perhaps, this is either a home made dummy or display cartridge detonator. That, or it is meant for the Mulberry hill cartridges? All of the original detonators are either made out of stainless or chrome plated steel. So, I rather doubt that your example is MGC made.

Yes i agree with mark on this, its not open round style as the have a round end to them, i would say it is home made rather than mgc, only thing you can do is try some rounds and see if it works, it would be cp style rounds for that det pin trouble is cp rounds for the m76 are very hard to find open style are easier you may have to try some other round it, sort of p220 size.
