Do any of you guys know if there is a suitable replacement to the plastic/bakelite sideplates to the MGC MP-40?

Also, will the receiver hold up to being dipped in a hot tank? Or will it simply melt away!!??

Any advice on disassembly, de-rusting and refinishing would be greatly appreciated!

Regards,

Phil

Phil,

Try these guys http://www.historyarms.com/mp-40.html Or: http://www.ssroom.com/index.htm

Either one of these companies can supply the Bakelite/plastic foregrips. As for bluing the MGC mp40's receiver, it will blue fine in a hot bluing solution as long as the receivers prep is good enough. Birchwood Casey's "Super Blue" works really well with the proper surface prep and can be done at home fairly easily. To remove the rust, i would use steel wool to clean off the rust if its not too deep. If the receiver is pitted and the rust is really thick i would resort to glass beading (not sand blasting!)

How about getting the detonator pin outta there? I have the receiver tube stripped but the breach (block?) seems pretty locked into the end of tube. Is there a way to at least remove the pin so I can clean it up?

Sorry if this has been covered in past discussions, but this is the first MGC 40 I have ever ripped into... kinda fun!

The detonator can be removed with an aluminum cleaning rod that has been inserted into the chamber through the back of the receiver. The detonators are usually frozen fairly tightly into the chamber if they have been abused...

Wow... you are not kidding. I have been banging on the thing with a steel rod that slips inside the opening tip of the det pin, and it has not budged. Not sure if I am going ot be able to get it outta there.

Phil,

Did you soak the detonator with oil first?

I sprayed it with WD40... but you think I should just dunk the whole end of it into a container of lube for awhile then try to bang it out?

Try liquid wrench or something similar as WD 40 is more for water displacement than a oil.

Liq Wrench helped tremendously, along with a small sledge and a steel rod cut to the proper length! The corrosion was excessive inside the breach and pin area. But I did get it out... thanks for the sound advice.

Now, is the stock pin and carts on this MGC a workable arrangement, or is conversion to a Marushin pin and cartridge a better idea? How much work is entailed to do the conversion??

Thanks again for any advice.

Also just noticed, the curved ejector pin that helps eject the spent shell sis busted clean off at the base where the pin secures it at the base of the mag well. Any ideas on where I could find a suitable replacement? Will a real MP-40 part work?? Maybe a Marushin piece??

This part is obviously made of cheap pot metal... as it has the cracked and crumbly look to it...
