Building an HK94 From an Airsoft Empty
PostSubject: Building an HK94 From an Airsoft   Building an HK94 From an Airsoft Icon_minitimeSun Jul 05, 2009 4:30 pm

Why the HK94 and not just an MP5?

Because MP5s are everywhere! In .22 clone or Airsoft form. Everyone has at least five.

The HK94 is a lot closer to the real MP5 SMG which sell for $25,000-$50,000 USD! The HK94 “carbine” 9mm was released in the 1980s as the civilian model of the MP5. I was surprisingly close to the original. The only major changes were (1) a semi auto trigger system. (2) a ridiculously long barrel (3) the removal of the magazine release switch by the right side trigger finger.

Serious small arms collectors started eating these up as their only chance to get an MP5. Following certain protocols in some states the HK94 could legally have its barrel shortened and be converted to full auto. (or illegally)

HK94s currently sell (where legal) between $2000-$4000 USD.

The HK94 became the American MP5 and was used even used in many American action movies such as ‘Die Hard’ and ‘Predator.’

http://www.imfdb.org/index.php/Die_Hard

http://www.imfdb.org/index.php/Predator

My goal is to build a model HK94 9mm like the one used by Arnold Schwarzenegger in the film ‘Raw Deal.’

http://www.imfdb.org/index.php/Raw_Deal

The key differences in Schwarzenegger’s HK94 from an MP5 are (1) the long barrel with vented shroud (2) the fore grip (3) the old HK style selector switch. (4) the old style textured hand guard.

My questions regarding the parts needed are:

I plan the use a real weight Airsoft MP5 for the frame and remove the motor to accommodate a real MP5 magazine to make it appear that a 9mm round in chambered when the fake bolt is drawn back. (of course the shell won’t eject)

Is it easy to remove an Airsoft AEG motor? At least the part which is visible when the fake bolt is back?

The real challenge will be to find a Airsoft MP5 with the old style selector switch. Can anyone recommend an Airsoft which will meet my needs? Cheap? It doesn’t have to function.

Can an Airsoft magwell take a real MP5 9mm magazine? (I’m guessing probably not.) My back up plan is to simply customize an Airsoft mag to fit just a few dummy 9mm rounds.

The barrel shroud will be a challenge. I’d like to find an Airsoft shroud I know will fit. My problem has been that most Airsoft shrouds or fake suppressors feel like toys. They are as thin as an aluminum soda can and filled with plastic foam. Are there any good vented “strong” Airsoft barrel extensions you can recommend?

Is there any liquid or putty substance that I can use to fill the shroud to make it strong and heavy?

The other plan is to use a real HK94 or other real gun shroud. Any hints as to how to attach this heavy misfitted shroud to an Airsoft gun? I guess I would have to use some putty and a series of washers. Has anyone had any experience doing this to an Airsoft?

The fore grip should be pretty easy as all it would require would be a weaver rail and a fore grip.

Nice project Smile

SEF style lowers are available for some airsoft models, for example:

You would nee to modify the auto setting and change the pin attachment for a clip-on lower attachment. And also cut off/remove the paddle mag release.
The correct switch:

Judging from imfdb Kaminsky uses, at least, 2 different Hk94's, one with older, slim handguards, and also one newer with the fat handguard.

The only airsoft i've tinkered with was the Marui Mp5, removing the gears and motor was quite easy.
The motor is usually(?) located in the pistolgrip, not in the receiver.

No idea if a real MP5 magazine would fit.

I would think that to get some stability and solid feel in this conversion you'd need to go all-metal, and probably, if you cannot find a good airsoft alternative you'd have to go for a real barrel shroud.

I tried to find some info on how the original shroud was actually fitted to the gun, but i couldn't find anything.
It doesn't appear that the foregriup is attached using any rail interface.

I searched and found this:

http://arniesairsoft.co.uk/news2/wp-content/uploads/2009/04/image93.png hi-cap magazine that has real look "bullets"

I think it'll be hard to make a replica of the Hk-94/Raw Deal gun and not spend a lot of cash, if one went the cheap way i'm quite sure that it'd be less solid.

And if i understodd right this was suppose to be a dummy, not a plugfire modelgun?

Thanks.

Classic Army seems to offer an MP5 with the old style pistol grip and selector switch.

When the fake bolt is open the motor is visible so it is also inside the reciever.

An authentic HK barrel shroud seems the best option.

I’m not sure what type of Airsoft barrel extension to use. A simple dow may safice since it will be covered by the shroud.

Just detail but i do think that the part visible through the ejection port is the nozzle feeding the bb's into the "chamber" and also the air chamber.

Note the SEF lower at lower left corner.

Found this parts sheet of Classic Army Mp-5:
http://images.hobbytron.com/JG-CA-MP5A5TL-lg.jpg seems that you maybe? could substitute the muzzle for an aluminium pipe? Light but sturdy enough maybe...
