I might have forgotten all details, but as far as i know the HK G-11 was technically a success, when cook-off issues had been solved.
But political issues during the re-unification of west and east Germany didn't allow for any large scale acceptance of the G-11.

The concept of caseless ammunition is sound of course, but the development and acceptance of it isn't as easy...
The US is currently working on caseless ammo on the LSAT program: http://www.dtic.mil/ndia/2009infantrysmallarms/wednesdaysessioniv8536.pdf

What i find really intriguing on the G-11 is the rotating chamber and that when in burst mode the cyclic rate is extremely high, around 2000 rpm and for a 3-round burst there will be just one recoil impulse.

Sad to say i've never handled or shot one, yet.. Wink

Weird looking thing , not exactly ergonomic , maybe it was designed for a terminator ?

Carl. What a Face

The magazine in which I took the picture from only stated that after some shots the chamber was stuffed with burnt residue as well as chamber fractures etc (basically all the bad things happened)...so the plan subsequently dropped...but if this plan is basically a success before then H&K shall get the contract easier since they'd started on it some 20 years ago...

In my opinion: "powder-pressed" ceramic or steel (don't know the correct term - formed by recycled material making it in powder before casting/pressing them together again...so technically it's alloy) can be used as the shells which will dissolve as ash/residue very shortly after the projectile detached from the shell...and the waste dissolved will be dropped from under the rifle similar to passenger plane dropping off passengers' waste mid-air...but what will happen during full-auto - will the ash just spraying down like pesticide (and then enemies chase after you with the "ash-road")...?

Or another option: making AEG with steel BB pellets used having the same power as the real ammo...

Interesting photo - shows how much this is different from ammo we know today.
