Subject: Hobbyfix Colt Goverment... To Mod or Not to Mod? Sun Aug 24, 2008 1:16 pm

Hi guys,
I have just received a beautiful Colt .45 Government made by Hobbyfix with plans to modify it (remove the gold, blue it and if possible convert it to fire MGC CP-HW .45 rounds)
I will be doing a review of it soon and I have attached a similar photo (not my one)
Should I modify it of leave as is

8ace,
I think, lot of guys tried to convert PFC using MGC parts, don't hear much of success story. Usually, guys start to buy HW version to convert current "quack action" to normal "trigger & hammer" action. But, there would be lot more to come.
If I were you, find Wa Shan 45 and convert it to PFS. Although, it is PFS model as is, I found some of parts are not in good quality. Actually, this is what I am going to do. Seems like an aluminum barrel from Hobby Fix (for MGC 45) can fit to Wa Shan.
Regards,
S

Thanks for the info, it’s never easy to convert as it first seems.
What's "quack action"
I have stripped it down and had a look at the internals. It will cycle MGC .45 rounds through it and it looks like it needs a det pin and firing pin to work (famous last words )
I have seen those ZEKE aluminium MGC barrels which would solve half the problems (if they fit) and all I’d need to do then is sort out the breech block/firing pin.

8ace,
Quack action is something a slide moves back along with you squeeze a trigger. It is also referred as "slide action" or "Tanio action".
Yes, breech and f-pin would be the highest hurdle.
Good luck!

This one dosen't seem to do that, as you pull the trigger it just realeses the hammer exactly the same as on my old Wa Shan and marushin 1911's.
It might have been already modified

Seems like it.
The reason of this metal 45 been allowed to exist in Japan is, the metal version has the quack action (mechanizm totally different from a real gun). If yours function as regular triggger and hammer action, yes, seems it is already has been modified which is a good news for you.

Well, that really is a dilemma. Personally, I do not like the gold finish on these models, so my first reaction would be to suggest stripping it to silver of blue the thing. But here is the problem. That really is a nice model, as I am sure we are all aware of how dear those things can be. Purely because the model is so nice, I would be inclined to leave it gold. Maybe work on the internals to make it pfc, maybe not, but leave the finish gold I would say. Here is what I would suggest. Maybe a nice set of custom grips. They really do make a huge difference to a gun if done right. Maybe also, consider this, as it is gold, how about replpicating the Face Off guns that Nicholas Cage used? They looked nice in gold! In fact, I dont think that they would have looked as good in silver or blue. So it really is a tough call. Really tough. In the end the decision is yours, but I feel in the end I would have no choice but to leave it gold, and customize. Perhaps if you are not too keen on the Face Off thing, perhaps an internal Lazermax laser sight, or some descript of compensator or barrel extension? _________________

Hell, modify it, play with it and make sure to document the work you do to it with pictures and text for us to muse on
I'd love to see more pictures of it, even if you decide not to modify it! _________________ I need more model guns...

Cheers guys
I did forget the "leave it gold and convert it to PFC" which is what I’ll do as the general consensus is keep the gold.
I have posted a review of it with some pictures and will hopefully get a video if this firing ……….. When it’s converted.

I have to go against most on this i would get rid of the gold and convert it to fire as long as it would not destroy what is an excellent accurate copy of the 1911

The other possible problem with converting to PFC is will the slide/frame casting take the force
Watch this space for future developments (it could take a while)

I know this is a very old thread, over 10 years old. But I stumbled upon a video showing the HobbyFix Quack action. You pull the trigger and the slide moves. This is really odd in one way, as the M1911 is single action, but nice in another, as you can make the slide move without caps ...
