MGC All Metal M1897 Shotgun ... Info Needed

Anyone ever handle or owned an early MGC all metal 1897 Shotgun? I just got one in today, and looking it over am wondering if they were ever designed to cap fire? The shells look like dummies, and I don't really see a firning pin per se in the breach. An interesting rifle that looks and feels awfully realistic! Any info would be much appreciated... thanks!

Hi Phil,

I have seen a couple of these models over the years and they were all display models only,there were actually two versions of this too,one that loaded what looked like standard 12 gauge shells and the other one had a cross type plug in the breech and loaded a funny type of shell that was grooved up the sides to fit persumely to stop real shells from being loaded.
These models do turn up from time to time (there has been one for sale on this forum) and are a nice piece so you have a good find there.

Hi Phil,
MGC M97 shotgun was designed for use paper cap. Paper caps are hold in the shell by poly washer or scotch tape.
It has no firing pin in the breech and no chamber. Hammer piece that connected hammer hits the shell directly.

Wow! You nailed it buddy. That is EXACTLY what I have in my possession and that is exactly what the shells look like. So it is in fact a cap firing model shotgun. I can see how you would have to use tape or adhesive caps of some sort. Vey interesting indeed. Thank you so much. I will try to take pics of the shotgun later today if the sun comes out and the ground dries a bit... in case anyone actually wants to see this beast!
