| Hi, i just went to buy this C96 in a "Bourse aux armes" last month, I think it's a MGC 1970-1980. I want to make wood grips as on my P08. The fisrt step is made !....not the more difficult. Bonnes fêtes à tous. | |

| Sorry Peticopo - I missed your post! Ca va? It's a great MGC model - and wood grips will be great to make it more authentic. I have one also: ....and I intend to put wood grips on it sometime later this year. Good luck with your project! I look forward to your finished photos! Kiwigunner | |

| Today I came across this article i n Wikipedia about a Broomhandle copy made in China and chambered for .45ACP - apparently because they were also producing copies of the Thompson SMG! I find THAT very interesting. Kiwigunner" Shanxi Type 17 (.45 ACP)During the Warlord era of Chinese History in the early 20th century, the province of Shansi was ruled by the warlord Yen Hsi-shan, who had established a modern arms factory in his capital city of Taiyuan. Yen was equipping his troops with a locally produced copy of the Thompson sub machine gun, chambered for the .45 ACP cartridge, but was experiencing supply difficulties as his troops' sidearms were 7.63mm calibre C96 handguns.[19]
His solution was to produce a .45 ACP caliber version of the C96, thus standardizing ammunition and making supply easier.[19] Designated Type 17, production on the .45 caliber handgun began in 1929 at the Taiyuan Arsenal. They are inscribed (in Chinese) "Type 17" on the left hand side of the gun, and "Republic Year Eighteen, Made in Shansi" on the right hand side.[19] They were issued (along with Thompson SMGs) to railway guards in the province as defense against bandits and other warlords. Besides being chambered for a larger cartridge, the Shansi .45 pistols are noticeably bigger than their 7.63mm counterparts, with the 10-round magazine extending below the trigger guard. It was loaded using two 5-round stripper clips rather than the single 10-round stripper clips of the standard 7.63mm Mauser.
Most of the Shanxi .45 pistols were melted down after the Communist victory in the Chinese Civil War, largely due to their odd caliber for Communist Regulations, but a few examples were exported overseas for sale on the commercial market.[19] Approximately 8,500 Shanxi .45 caliber Broomhandle pistols are believed to have been produced by the Taiyuan Arsenal, but there is some debate as to how many of the Shanxi .45 calibre Broomhandle pistols currently on the commercial market were actually produced for Yen's troops, and how many are more recent productions for the US collectors' market."

| Hi Kiwigunner, ça va bien, merci.
My project is in stand by. I have no time and my "workshop" is cold, it's winter in France...but soon ihope.
For the C96 I knew 7.63, 9mm, but not 45acp.

| Nice one Peticopo...very nice... I don't have the skill to make wood grips - but now I've to modify a wood grip but don't know which tool can do the job... Very clever of Wa Shan not to cut the part circled on their factory wood grip like their metal M84 grips - if I don't do something about it I cannot pull the slide back as the trigger bar cannot move back ... | |

| Thank you Jim, I agree with Momocampo to use Dremel, it must be not too difficult and this part seems to be hidden. But be careful with "le sens du bois" vein of wood (?)it could make broken wood (éclats de bois) (i'm sorry for my poor english).

| When using a Dremmel on similar raised blocks I've found it useful to use a sharp blade (Stanley Knife or Scalpel) to CAREFULLY score cuts around the base of the block to prevent unintended splitting! Occasionally repeating the process as the bits are removed.
The operative words are work SLOWLY & CAREFULLY as you go. Sometimes I've used the blade parts where the wood grain changes angle or density, and carefully made small vertical and horizontal incisions and removed wood before sanding with a Dremmel.

| Thank You All You Guys for the generous inputs ...but I'd got something simpler (and should be cheaper than Dremel) last night from some model shop: Had already underway on and off last night...hopefully shouldn't take long to complete... | |
