What's the difference between the black version and the normal version? Is it just slightly darker in colour? Also, is there such thing as a non Heavy Weight M4A1? Most websites market them as Heavy Weight, so I wasn't sure if there was a different version. How many different MGC M4A1s are there?

Ok I think I've figured it out. The black version seems to be the late model production version, the older ones have a more grey coloured receiver. This link ( http://homepage3.nifty.com/nkoinuma/OtherWars.htm ) shows an old model M4A1. You can see at this link ( http://www.modelguns.co.uk/images/M4A1u.jpg ) that the rifle is darker, and the box has a sticker on it saying 'Black'. I guess all the MGC M4A1s are Heavy Weight, purely because they are model guns and are supposed to be realistic. Here is another link that compares the two: http://www.dentrinityshop.com/pr_list.jsp?cid=COL&bid=MGUN&pg=2&rpp=10

No, the current MGC M4A1 models are all heavy weight. Earlier M16A1 series (including carbines) and the early M16A2 "M725" Carbine were available in less heavy, rather shiny ABS plastic. But those models were less prone to break than the HW material I think.

The first M4A1 edition came out with a silvergrey finish, but the foregrip and carry handle was black. The later M4A1 (and M4A1 short "M933 Commando, M4A1 RIS and M16A2 Commando "M733") have a nice dull black finish.

Anyway I like the silvergrey finish too. It tends to get darker if used (handled) or oiled, giving the gun a rather realistic "metal with wear" impression.

Check Francky´s website. He has photos of both guns, although the black one is sold.

You can check www.modelguncollector.co.uk - go to assault rifles and you can find nice photos there. They are very helpful there and their service is second to none. You can also check this review done by Claymore http://www.mp40modelguns.com/forum2/viewtopic.php?t=60 with some updates (about the latest RIS version) or my short review on the M733 http://www.mp40modelguns.com/forum2/viewtopic.php?t=1465 , there are some detailed photos too.
Generally speaking the MGC M4 series is a rather impressive and reliable modelgun when it comes to firing, I really like it. I´d even say it is my favourite model. But stripping and cleaning is complicated so I do not fire mine much. Even worse, the HW plastic can break rather quickly. I had the rear lug break on an upper receiver as wall as a bolt carrier, and since MGC has closed down getting spares is hard.
